Sea walls - hard
These are walls made out of materials such as concrete which reflects waves/wave energy back to the sea.

Rock armour - hard
When boulders are piled up along the coast.

Groynes- hard
Woden or stone fences that are built as right angles to the coast. They trap material transported by longshhore drift.

Beach nourishment - soft
When sand and shingle is dredged from other areas such as the offshore seabed, is added to the beach.

When an existing sea defence is removed allowing the landbehind it to flood.
