Land Reclamation
The process of creating new land on the sea, which is enclosed by an embankment and then drained.
1 of 10
Hold the line
Maintaining or upgrading the level of protection provided by defences already in place (eg Blackpool)
2 of 10
Managed retreat
Moving the line of defence inland. Allows retreat of the shoreline, with the ability to control or limit movement.
3 of 10
Advance the line
Building new coastal defences seaward of the existing defence line
4 of 10
Rias
Drowned or flooded river valleys formed at the end of the last ice age.
5 of 10
Coastal Zoning
Divides the coast into land use zones. Identifies the zones at risk of erosion where the costs exceed the benefits, so they may not get protection.
6 of 10
Eustatic change
Change in sea level (increases as land ice melts). Global change.
7 of 10
Isostatic change
Change in the level of the land. Local change. Occurs after land ice melts (after an Ice Age), and the land rises after the weight is removed. Causes a relative fall in sea level.
8 of 10
Flood Risk equation
Risk = Hazard + Vulnerability
9 of 10
