What are the social impacts?

Houses are flooded and whole communities can be made homeless; flooding can contaminate water supplies with sea water and desalination plants are very expensive

What are the environmental impacts?

Flooding narrows beaches which act as a barrier to erosion of land, if they are narrower, the land will erode faster. The depth of soil is only 20cm flooding can wash this away and prevent plant growth.

What are the economical impacts?

Tourism is the largest industry, if tourists are cut off due to flooding then the countries income may decrease. Fish is the largest export, if the ports are damaged in flooding and fishing declines then the income will decrease.

What are the political impacts?

The Japanese government paid $60 million for a 3m sea wall to protect the capital, Male. Maldivian government has made plans to buy land in India and Australia if the Maldives need to be evacuated
