Groyne
a low wall or sturdy timber barrier built out into the sea from a beach to check erosion and drifting.

Sea Wall
a wall or embankment erected to prevent the sea encroaching on or eroding an area of land.

Offshore Breakwater
a barrier built out into the sea to protect a coast or harbour from the force of waves.

Revetments
revetments are sloping structures placed on banks or cliffs in such a way as to absorb the energy of incoming water.

Rock armour/Rip-Rap
is rock or other material used to armor shorelines, streambeds, bridge abutments, pilings and other shoreline structures against scour and water or ice erosion.

Coastal Erosion
Coastal erosion is the wearing away of land and the removal of beach or dune sediments by wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, drainage or high winds

Longshore Drift
the movement of material along a coast by waves which approach at an angle to the shore but recede directly away from it.

Spit
A spit is an extended stretch of beach material that projects out to sea and is joined to the mainland at one end. Spits are formed where the prevailing wind blows at an angle to the coastline, resulting in longshore drift.
