Coastal Management

?
Sea Walls
Hard engineering technique. In an attempt to reduce coastal erosion and flooding. Expensive, and seen as unattractive, but hey are successful as they refract energy from the waves and have reduced erosion. They also create a boardwalk for tourists.
1 of 8
Groynes
Wooden Pillars that extend out to sea. Attempt to stop LSD, as they do this they rebuild the beach back up. Pretty effective but can starve the beach of sediment in some areas. Don't last long
2 of 8
Gabions
Gabions arebundles of rocks in a metal mesh. They’re placed at the base of a cliff in an attempt to reduce the impact of waves on the cliff and prevent the cliff from being undercut. They’re not particularly effective and they’re quite ugly. But cheap
3 of 8
Revetments
Concrete structures along the base of the cliff, act as a barrier and absorb wave energy. Effective but expensive. Don't need maintenance
4 of 8
Rip Rap
Rocks against the base of the cliff, to deflect sediment and wave energy. Attractive as they blend into the environment but susceptible to movement
5 of 8
Cliff Drainage
Inserting drainage pipes into a cliff to remove excess water. Preventing landslides and have a natural appearance but cliff is still open to erosion and water could saturate soft rock
6 of 8
Beach Nourishment
Building up the beach by adding more sand to it, this limits wave power and energy. Also makes the beach more attractive to tourists. Cheap strategy
7 of 8
Dune Regeneration
Artificially creating new sand dunes. Creates a barrier between land and sea, marram grass traps sand and also creates ecosystems this isn't very effective as people walk on them
