What was Rosenhan's aim?
To see if the sane could be distinguished from the insane using the DSM.

Describe Rosenhan's procedure.
8 pseudo patients went to 12 different hospitals. Gave false names and false jobs. Said they could hear voices. Acted normal when in hospital.

What were Rosenhan's results?
None were detected as being sane. 7 were diagnosed with schizophrenia.

What were Rosenhan's conclusions?
Staff cannot distinguish between sane and insane. Dsm is not a valid measurement of mental illness.

What were Goldstein's aims?
To see if there is any difference in the age of onset of schizophrenia between 2 sexes. To see if women have a less severe course than men.

Describe Goldstein's procedure.
199 women and men diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1970s. Aged 18-45 living with a family member. 10 years later, 169/199 re-diagnosed with revised DSM.

What were Goldstein's results?
Schizophrenic women had a lower number of re-hospitalisations and shorter stays over the 10 years. Premorbid and social functioning affect hospitalisations.

Gender differences are present.

Psychoanalysis and drugs.
