what are the criticisms for existence of disorders?
they're not separate entities, the boundary between health and illness is fuzzy, the same genes exist in different disorders
1 of 13
what are some criticisms for the biomedical view?
can't just be biomedical - people recover without meds, so many genes involved (all vulnerable), as much evidence for environment as bio, exp affect bio, life stories are ignored and bio theories contribute to stigma
2 of 13
what are the advantages of case studies?
identify rare events which can be hard to study systematically, v. detailed info, good future research ideas
3 of 13
what are the disadvantages of case studies?
imposs to generalise to whole population
4 of 13
what was the case study about paedophila?
when man had a right orbitofrontal tumour growing he had paedophila and constructional apraaxia
5 of 13
what are the advantages of epidemiology?
large sample sizes can be generalised to whole population, often large scale
6 of 13
what were the disadvantages of epidemiology?
based on potentially unreliable diagnostic categories, employs a biomedical approach
7 of 13
what are the advantages of surveys?
can have large, eco valid samples, some grasp causality
8 of 13
what are the disadvantages of surveys?
reliance on self reports, can have biased sampling
9 of 13
what are the advantages of experiments?
some control over causality, control over variables
10 of 13
what are the disavantages of experiments?
may not be poss to manipulate relevant variables, low eco validity, samples may not be representative
11 of 13
what are the advantages of qualitative studies?
brings meaning to experiences, can generate new hypotheses for quantitative studies, scan establish some causality
12 of 13
what are the disadvantages of qualitative studies?
can't be generalised to whole population, can be difficult to relate to quantitative findings
