CLIMATE CHANGE - EFFECTS

?
Environmental - rising sea levels
- Warmer temp.s=glaciers to shrink (loss of polar habitats) and ice sheets like greenland to melt. - Causes sea levels to rise.
1 of 11
Environmental - flooding
- Rising sea levels means low-lying and coastal areas, like the Maldives, will be flooded more regularly. - Increased coastal erosion. - Submerged coastal areas. - Loss of habitats.
2 of 11
Environmental - loss of species
- Some species are declining due to warming, e.g. some coral reefs are suffering from bleaching due to increasing sea water temp.s.
3 of 11
Environmental - precipitation
- Precipitation patterns are changing. - Effects how much rain we get.
4 of 11
Environmental - decrease in biodiversity and change in distribution
- Some species are now found in higher latitudes due to warming temp.s. - Damaged/destroyed habitats=extinction of adapted species.
5 of 11
Social - deaths
- In some places deaths due to heat have increased, but deaths due to cold have decreased.
6 of 11
Social - housing
- Hot and dry areas become impossible to inhabit. - Low-lying coastal areas could be lost due to sea or flooding. - Migration and overcrowding in other countries.
7 of 11
Social - water
- Some areas struggling to supply enough water for residents due to problems with water availability caused by changing rainfall patterns. - Lead to political tensions (e.g. where rivers cross borders).
8 of 11
Social - farming
- Some crops have suffered from climate change (e.g. maize crops have got smaller due to warming in recent yrs). - Some farmers in high-latitude countries are finding that crops benefit from warmer conditions.
9 of 11
Social - lower crop yields
- Lower crop yields could increase malnutrition, ill health and death from starvation, particularly in lower latitudes.
10 of 11
Social - impacts from increasing extreme weather
- Weather is getting more extreme, so more money has to be spent on predicting extreme weather events, reducing their impacts and rebuilding after them.
