What evidence is there for climate change?
Ice Cores, Diaries and Paintings, Sea Ice Positions and Temperature Data
1 of 15
Why are diaries and paintings an unreliable source of evidence for climate change?
They only give one person's viewpoint and the climate can be emphasised
2 of 15
How do ice cores show evidence for climate change?
Scientists drill into ice sheets and by analysing the gases trapped, they can tell what the temperature was each year
3 of 15
How do sea ice positions show evidence for climate change?
By observing the maximum and minimum extent of sea ice each year, scientists can tell how ocean temperatures are changing
4 of 15
What are the natural causes for climate change?
Milankovitch cycles, Sunspots, Volcanic activity and the Natural Greenhouse Effect
5 of 15
How do the Milankovitch cycles affect the Earth's climate?
They affect how far the Earth is from the Sun, and the angle that the Sun's rays hit the Earth. This changes the amount of solar radiation the Earth receives
6 of 15
How do sunspots cause climate change?
Sunspots are cooler areas on the Sun's surface which increase the Sun;s output of energy. They come and go in cycles of about 11 years
7 of 15
How does volcanic activity cause climate change?
Volcanic eruptions eject large quantities of material, some of which reflect the Sun's rays back into space, so the Earth's surface cools
8 of 15
What are the human activities that contribute to the greenhouse effect?
Farming, Burning Fossil Fuels, Deforestation and Cement Production
9 of 15
How does cement production contribute to the enhanced greenhouse effect?
Cement is made from limestone, which contains carbon. When produced, cement releases lots of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
10 of 15
What are some examples of greenhouse gases?
Water vapour, Carbon dioxide and Methane
11 of 15
What are some environmental impacts that climate change has on the UK?
Temperatures will increase, Droughts are expected to be more frequent and intense, Sea levels will rise and Species will become extinct
12 of 15
What are some economic impacts that climate change has on the UK?
Fishing industry will be affected, Boost in tourism, High temperatures increase the productivity in some crops and there will be an increased need for Irrigation
13 of 15
What are some social impacts the climate change has on the UK?
Drier summers will affect water availability, Increase in flooding, there will be more heat-related illnesses and less cold-related illnesses
14 of 15
How might species distribution be affected by climate change?
Some species will be found in higher latitudes due to warmer weather and some habitats will be damaged/destroyed
