Climate and Change

?
What is the Eruption Theory?
Ash from erupting volcanoes reaches the upper atmosphere and blows around the whole atmosphere to blanket the earth. Sunlight is absorbed or reflected.
1 of 21
What is changes in solar output?
The sun is more active now than the past 1000 years. There are sunspots rising which emit hotter sunlight and warms the earth.
2 of 21
What is the circle-eclipse theory?
Every 100,000 years, the orbit changes from a circle to an eclipse (oval). Sometimes we are closer to the sun and it gets hotter, sometimes we are further away from the sun and it gets cooler.
3 of 21
What is the axis theory?
Every 41,000 years, the earth tilts closer to the sun causing a hotter climate.
4 of 21
What is the wobble theory?
Every 26,000 years the earth wobbles and goes straight. The part of the sun which moves closer to the sun gets hotter.
5 of 21
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect?
When greenhouse gases have been trapped so the planet gets warmer.
6 of 21
What are the 3 main global causes of climate change?
Burning fossil fuels, agriculture and global trade.
7 of 21
How much more powerful is methane than Carbon Dioxide?
21 times
8 of 21
What releases methane?
Gas pipeline leaks, farming rice in paddy fields and cattle farming.
9 of 21
How is Bangladesh effected by climate change?
Storms, cyclones and rising sea levels has ruined farmed land as it becomes brackish. 15% of Bangladesh will be under water by 2050.
10 of 21
What is brackish water?
When salt water mixes with fresh water, it becomes brackish so crops cannot grow and it is not drinkable.
11 of 21
How is the barrier reef effected by climate change?
Warmer water makes coral bleach white and die. Storms and cyclones smash and destroy the reef. Increased flooding washes land pollution into the sea and pollutes the reef. The fish move away which means there is no food for sea-birds.
12 of 21
What impact could climate change have?
200 million more people starving by 2050, 500 million climate refugees will be created, 25% of land animals will become extinct due to habitat loss and food demand, climate wars are also predicted over food and water.
13 of 21
What is the debate that climate change is a real issue now?
51% of greenhouse emissions are from livestock
14 of 21
What is the debate that climate change is natural?
Its just a natural pattern of the temperature rising and lowering. In the last 17 years, the average temperature of the earth has not risen.
15 of 21
What is the debate to act now?
Climate change could reduce the GDP of LIC's by 19%. Floods in the UK expected to increase 10 times. 80% of economic costs of climate change will hit the poorest parts of the world.
16 of 21
What is the debate that we should do nothing?
According to climate change scientists, this is the beginning of the end for a peaceful evolution. It will cost $140 billion a year to help protect against climate change so it is too expensive. Ethnic tension could lead to climate change wars.
17 of 21
What happened in the 1992 earth summit in Rio De Janeiro?
The united nations framework convention on climate change is signed by 154 nations to set voluntary targets for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
18 of 21
What is the Kyoto protocol in 1977?
178 HIC's signed to reduce emissions by 5%.
19 of 21
What are the global strategy concerns?
It's only voluntary to sign up, there were no consequences of not meeting the targets, people don't want to sign up as it costs too much. Developing countries cannot afford to reduce their emissions as they are still developing.
20 of 21
What are local strategies to climate change?
Reduce, reuse and recycle, energy efficient appliances, lift sharing, reducing the amount of meat and animal products we consume.
