Eruption Theory
If a large eruption produces enough ash and gas, then they can rise and block sunligt from reaching the surface of the Earth, this will cool the temperature.
1 of 12
Sunspot Theory
If the sun has more spots, than it is firing out more solar energy then when it has less.
2 of 12
Asteroid Collision Theory
If an asteroid big enough hit the Earth, then it can cause a lot of ash and dust to rise into the atmosphere, blocking out the sunkight like a volcanic eruption.
3 of 12
Orbital Theory
Three changes can alter the way the sunlight falls on the Earth: the Milankovitch Cycles
4 of 12
Milankovitch Cycles
The changes which affect how much sunlight reaches the Earths surface: 1) a more cirlcular or ellipse (oval) orbit. 2) a tilted or upright axis. 3) If the axis wobbles or not.
5 of 12
Climate
The seasonal patterns of weather that can be predicted.
6 of 12
Ice Cores
Scientists can determine what the climate was like in the past by drilling into ice sheets and measuring how much caron dioxide is trapped in the air bubbles within each layer
7 of 12
Tree Rings
Within each tree is a ring and every year a new ring is formed. If the spaces between rings are bigger then the weather has been warmer/wetter so the tree has grown more. But if the gap is thinner, then the weather was colder/drier
8 of 12
Historical Sources
Old photos, drawings, paintings, records, newspapers, diaries, recorded dates of events (eg. harvests) etc can determine what the climate was in the past even though they are not very accurate.
9 of 12
Greenhouse Gases
Gases that trap heat in the Earths atmosphere (eg. Carbon Dioxide and Methane)
10 of 12
Greenhouse Effect
The gases that trap heat from the sun act like glass, let heat in but doesn't let most get out.
11 of 12
Greenhouse Emissions
The amount of greenhouses gases are emitted by a source. The more developed a country is or the bigger the population, the more greenhouse gases they emit.
