what type of volume do the three states of matter have?
solids and liquids both have a definite volume but gases have no definite volume and always fill the container they are in
1 of 23
what tpe of shapes the the three states of matter have?
solids have a definite shape, liquids match the shape of the container and gases become the same shape as the container
2 of 23
what type of density do the three states of matter have?
solids usually have a very high density, liquids have a medium density and gases have a very low density
3 of 23
why is the density like this?
in solids because there are a lot of particles and in a small volume, in liquids because there is a quite lot of particles in a small volume and in gases because there is not many particles in a lare volume
4 of 23
what is the compessibility like with the three states of matter?
solids and liquids are not easily squashed but gases are easily squashed
5 of 23
what si the ease of flow likewith the three states of matter?
solids do not flow, liquids flow easliy and so do gases
6 of 23
what are the three states of matter?
solids, liquids and gases
7 of 23
what are all materials made up of?
tiny particles
8 of 23
which state you get depends on how strongly they stick together what does this depend on?
the temperature, the material and the pressure
9 of 23
what is the force of attraction like between the particles in each of the three states?
solids have a strong force of attraction, liquids have some forces of atraction and gases have a weak force of attraction
10 of 23
what are the two effects when you increase the temperature on gas?
the particle will it the wall harder and more often
11 of 23
what happens when you reduce the volume?
this makes the pressure increase this is because when the particles are squashed up into a smaller space they hit the walls more often
12 of 23
what is diffusion?
when particles "want" to spread out
13 of 23
what are atoms?
these are tiny tiny particles
14 of 23
what are the three things about atoms?
all matter is made of them, there are different types of atoms and each element contains a diffferent atom
15 of 23
what is the symbol for oxygen?
O
16 of 23
what is the symbol for carbon?
C
17 of 23
what is the symbol for helium?
He
18 of 23
what is the symbol for iron?
Fe
19 of 23
whatt is a element?
the atoms are all the same but not joined up, the atoms are joined but there's still only one atom
20 of 23
what is a compound?
they have different atoms joined together
21 of 23
what is a mixture?
different atoms but not joined up
22 of 23
what is a chemical bond/join?
when two or more atoms join together a molecule is made
