Involves the whole brain and includes TONIC-CLONIC and ABSENCE seizures. Often leads to unconsciousness.
1 of 8
Focal Seizures
Partial seizures. Localised to focus, degree of consciousness varies, lasts a few mins, may involve involuntary muscle contractions (motor cortex) and abnormal sensory experiences (sensory cortex). Can lead to generalised seizure.
2 of 8
Simple
No loss of consciousness.
3 of 8
Complex
Some loss of unconsciouness.
4 of 8
Tonic-Clonic
"Grand Mal". Two phase seizure. Tonic - 1st min - loss of consciousness, rigidity, stop breathing, defaecation/urination. Clonic - several more mins - severe synchronous muscle spasms (STATUS EPILEPTICUS)
5 of 8
Absence
"Petit mal". Less duration than T-C, greater frequency. Blank staring and unresponsiveness of short duration. Common in children.Widespread excitation.
6 of 8
Status Epilepticus
Potentially life threatening. Continuous, uninterrupted seizures requiring emergency treatment.
7 of 8
