Generalised seizures
Involves the whole brain and includes TONIC-CLONIC and ABSENCE seizures. Often leads to unconsciousness.

Focal Seizures
Partial seizures. Localised to focus, degree of consciousness varies, lasts a few mins, may involve involuntary muscle contractions (motor cortex) and abnormal sensory experiences (sensory cortex). Can lead to generalised seizure.

Simple
No loss of consciousness.

Complex
Some loss of unconsciouness.

Tonic-Clonic
"Grand Mal". Two phase seizure. Tonic - 1st min - loss of consciousness, rigidity, stop breathing, defaecation/urination. Clonic - several more mins - severe synchronous muscle spasms (STATUS EPILEPTICUS)

Absence
"Petit mal". Less duration than T-C, greater frequency. Blank staring and unresponsiveness of short duration. Common in children.Widespread excitation.

Status Epilepticus
Potentially life threatening. Continuous, uninterrupted seizures requiring emergency treatment.

Myoclonic
Rare. Brief spasmodic contraction of muscles, resulting in jerky movement.
