Name the 7 groups that all organisms are classified into.
Kingdom, phylum,class,order,family,genus and species.
1 of 15
What are the 2 ways organisms can be classifed?
1)) Artificial system 2)) Natural system
2 of 15
Explain the classification method- artificial system .
It is based on 1 or 2 characteristics that make identification easier.
3 of 15
Explain the classification method- natural system
It is based on evolutionary relationships so animals that are more closely related are more likely to be in the same group.
4 of 15
How has sequencing the bases in DNA been helpful?
It has helped scientists to know more about how closely related organisms are and has often meant that organisms can be reclassified.
5 of 15
Define species.
Species are a group of organisms that can interbreed to make fertile offspring.
6 of 15
How are all organisims named?
By the binomial system.
7 of 15
how does the binomial system work?
- The 1st part is the genus and the second the species. - The genus part starts with a capital letter and the species part start with a lower-case letter.
8 of 15
Why is it difficult to to place organisims into distinctive groups?
Because living things are at different stages of evolution and new ones are being discovered all the time.
9 of 15
Why is bacteria difficult to classify in a distinctive group?
They do not interbreed, they produce asexually , so they cannot be classifed into different species using the fertile offspring idea
10 of 15
Why is a mule difficult to classify in a distinctive group?
They are hybrids meaning that they are infertile, so mules cannot be classified as a species.
11 of 15
Why may organisms that are grouped together have different features?
Because they live in different habitats.
12 of 15
What should we remember when classying organisms?
Similarities and differences between organisms may have different explanations.
13 of 15
Why do dolphins have similarties to fish?
Because they are ecologically related ( they live in the same habitat.
14 of 15
Why and how are bats and dolphins related?
They both evolved to live in different habitats, they are also both mammals, they are related through evolution.
