Define depression
Classified using DSM-IV classification system. It is classed as a mood disorder, which effect a persons emotional state.

What is the difference between inter-rater reliability and test retest reliability?
IRR = Whether 2 separate assessors give the same diagnosis. TRR = Whether tests used to give diagnosis are consistent over time.

What did Lobberstael et al find about IRR? (AO1)
Clinical structured interviews for major depression patients and non patients. = moderate agreement --> IRR coefficient = .66

What did Keller find about reliability? (AO2)
IRR = 'fair to good' ... TRR = 'fair at best'

Correlation. IRR = .80 TRR=.61

What did Keller say were the reasons for low reliability? (AO2)
5 out 9 symptoms were needed. If there was a disagreement on one symptom, can cause faulty diagnosis.

Extent that the classification system measures what it is supposed to measure.

If a diagnosis is not valid, it cant be reliable.

Define Comorbidity. (AO1)
When 2 different conditions co-occur. Research = anxiety is the biggest risk factor for depression.

What has comorbidity shown to have a negative effect on? (AO2)
Social functioning and responses to treatments.

What did Goodwin find about Validity? (AO2)
Patients with major depression were 5x higher to have suicidal thoughts than non depressed. When comorbid with a panic disorder, the ratio is 3x this.

Define content validity. (AO1)
Whether items in a test are representative of what is being measured.

Why is the BDI considered to be high in content validity?
It was created from a consensus of mental health clinicians.

What did Van Weel-Baugarten say about GP's? (AO2)
Diagnosis made by GP's was based on background knowledge of their patients. = low validity, it doesnt represent something which is real. It is subjective, effecting objectivity.
