Values/beliefs of lower class subcultures are a 'self-imposed barrier' to educational success. They believe they have less oppourtunity and so they see no point in education.

What is Keddie's criticism to cultural deprivation?
Sees it as a myth. Its a victim-blaming explanation. A child cannot be deprived of its own culture. W/c children are culturally different not deprived.

Blackstone and Mortimore also criticize w/c parents being not interested in their children's education. How?
They attend fewer parents evenings, not because they lack interested because they work longer/odd hours. Or they are put off by school's middle class atmosphere.
