teachers often attach labels regardless of the pupil's actual ability and attitude. they label pupils based on their class background

Self-fulfilling prophecy
when a pupil is labelled they begin to accept the label and believe it so they internalise it

Streaming
separating children into different ability groups, each ability group is then taught different at different levels

Educational Triage
schools categorise pupils into three types: those who will pass anyway can be left to get on, those with potential who get helped, hopeless cases who are doomed to fail

Polarisation
process in which pupils respond to streaming by moving towards one of two opposite poles/extremes

pro-school and anti-school subcultures
pro-school-placed in high streams and tend to remain committed to school values. Anti-school- placed in low streams often rebel or dont care

Schools have a middle class habitus define Habitus
a group's habitus is formed as a response to its position in the class structure, it refers to the being and acting shared by a particular social class

Symbolic capital
because schools have a middle class habitus, pupils who have been socialised at home into middle class preferences etc gain symbolic capital which is recognition and value at school

Symbolic violence
the school devalues the working class habitus and working class tastes etc are deemed worthless, Bourdieu calls this witholding of symbolic capital 'symbolic violence' as it reinforces the class system
