What geographical factors influenced Red sucess? (3)
1. The Bolsheviks held the central area, including Petrograd and Moscow. They moved the capital to Moscow, at the hub of the railway network. 2. This area contained armament factories. 3. The central area was heavily populated.

They were scattered around the edges of the central area, seperated by large distances.

It was hard to communicate, transport men/weapons, didn't coordinate attacks.

They had a single and unified command structure.

He organised the Red Army.

What was an issue for the Whites when it came to unity?
The Whites were comprised of different groups who all had different aims and beliefs. This made it impossible to cooperate. The generals also didn't trust each other which made things worse.

How was Trotsky a good leader?
He was brave and inspiring for the men on the front. He also ensured that dicipline was tough.

How did Lenin make the Reds more popular?
Land reforms and changes for workers encoraged support.

What else lost the Whites support?
They lost support of nationalist groups as they wanted to expand Russia into countries including Ukraine.

Why did the Blosheviks have more support?
They managed the cities well and offered the best chance of the workers and the Peasants maintaining the gains of 1917.

Was the foreign influence possitive or negative for the Whites?
Yes- brought them supplies and weapons. No- it was largely ineffective and half hearted. It also gave the Reds propaganda for protecting their soil against foreign control.

What strength did Denkin underestimate?
Propaganda. The Reds were imaginative and won popular support by making the Whites look more and more like villans, whilst publisin the benifits of supporting them which included; giving the people land and protecting against foriegn powers.
