What does the phrase 'rate of reaction' mean?
How quickly a quantity of something changes or the rate at which reactants are converted into products
1 of 7
How do you measure the rate of reaction?
Change in property / time taken
2 of 7
What are the five ways of measuring the rate of reaction?
Measure volumes of gases evolved (e.g. CO2 produced from reaction between CaCO3 and HCl), measure mass changes, pH measurement, colorimetry (e.g. Zn + CuSO4, measure decrease of blue colour of CuSO4) and chemical analysis/titration (quenching)
3 of 7
What does chemical analysis/titration involve?
Taking samples of the reaction mixture at regular intervals and stopping the reaction in the sample before analysis, by a process known as quenching (e.g. acid-catalysed reaction between iodine and propanone)
4 of 7
What compound is used to quench a sample extracted from a reaction mixture (e.g. iodine and propanone)?
Sodium hydrogencarbonate is used. This neutralises the acid catalyst (stopping the reaction). Any unreacted iodine can then be analysed by titration with a thiosulfate solution
5 of 7
Example - Hydrolysis of methyl methanoate using sodium hydroxide
Rate of reaction is followed by monitoring the concentration of NaOH as it is used up during the course of the reaction. Samples are taken from the reaction mixture and are quenched by dilution (volume of ice-cold water)
6 of 7
Example - Hydrolysis of methyl methanoate using sodium hydroxide (2)
Concentration of NaOH remaining in each reaction sample is determined by titrating it with an acid such as dilute HCl
