JUST CAUSE - e.g in defence or to aid a friendly nation against aggressors (it must not be for a selfish cause such as to gain land or to gain revenge).

LAST RESORT - All other methods of negotiation and peace-keeping must have been tried first.

ACHIEVABLE AIM - Must have a reasonably chance of success (to limit the needless waste of human life lost).

PROPORTIONALITY - Any harm caused must be less than the harm being prevented by war (For example WMD's would violate this term).

Conditions for fighting a war justly ...
(DISCRIMINATION - war should discriminate between combatants) and civilians and there must be (PROPORTIONALITY - military advantage gained by attack must outweigh any harm to civilians).

Fought for a religious aim or purpose e.g - The Crusades

Pacifism
The belief that all violence is wrong under any circumstance (a particular belief for Quakers)

Violence goes against Christian teaching -
'all who draw the sword will die by the sword' and 'turn the other cheek' - New Testiment.

Conscientious Objectors
Faced prison in WW1 rather than fight - they faced great humiliation and hostility when they were released at the end of the war.
