The bible as the only authority for Christian ethical principles
The Bible is the only source of authority because it is the word of God (Biblicist view). The bible is infallible. Ethics illustrated through real life situations

Literalism and interpretation
Not everything can be taken literally (Matthew 5:29- right eye sin, tear it out). Barth- literalism gives the Bible a false sense of divinity. Christian thenonomus have to take into account human reason to decide what is a metaphor etc

Dealing with contradictions
Old Testament- permits war, capital punishment and revenge. NT- evises old law and love of one's enemies. Only evident if the bible is taken as a rule book.

Roman catholic ethical heteronomy (several sources of authority).
Natural law. God's eternal law is natural law and it is based on self evident principle that good is to be done and evil avoided.

Protestant ethical heteronomy- Bible, reason, conscience and church tradition,
The bible didn't appear as a single document but evolved over time and developed out of the reflections and needs of the community. Thus ethics should continue to develop in worshipping communities and be guided by reason, church and conscience.

Christian ethics can only be done within the Christian worshipping community. Christian ethics are part of a narrative which develops out of the Bible and develops out of the Bible and continues on through tradition. Still not subjective/individual.

Love as the only Christian ethical principle that governs Christian principle.
Love in its distinctive Christian form is summarised in Jesus' own life sacrificed for others and his teach on other-centeredness and not the polar.

Hans Kung- greater autonomy in decision making. He defines a global ethical stance. Jesus challenged rule based ethics and he challenged the disciples to make their own judgements

Situation ethics- pragmatism, relativism, personalism and positivism
