Obedience, leadership and doing God's will

all to discipleship is a call to obedience to the leadership of Jesus. Doing God’s will means that we cannot take on the call on our own terms.Bonhoeffer believes that such an act of obedience is only real faith. Single minded obedience.

Civil disobedience

Bonhoeffer saw duty to God was more important than duty to the state Need to break with the lutheran teaching that a christian should obey the civil authority of its laws.

Church as community and source of spiritual discipline

Bonhoeffer is writing about what he calls the ‘visible community’ of the church which must follow in its mission and be a sign for others. Without salt and light, the church is light.

Cheap grace

Means god’s love and mercy, given freely to people, which includes the forgiveness of sins and the offer of eternal life. Bonhoeffer saw it as the deadly enemy of the church, means grace sold on the market at cut prices

Costly grace

Is the grace that is the treasure hidden in a field, that a person would gladly sell everything to obtain. It is something that is worth sacrificing everything for in order to get.

Sacrifice, suffering and the cross

Allegiance to the Jesus involves suffering not like the suffering of human life in general terms, the pains of life which all people face, but a specific suffering and rejection, and rejection not for a cause that we have, but rejection for Christ

Solidarity

Bonhoeffer saw christ as a man for others. For Bonhoeffer, we encounter the transcendental God in the middle of life, when we are there for our neighbours, when we are within reach of their situation.
