The nationalists (Kumintang) led by Chiang Kia-Sek and the Chinese communist party led by Mao Zedong

$2 million aprox and some military aid

What was the Marshall Mission?
A plan supported by both the US and USSR an attempt at Mao and Chiang forming a coalition government - the mission failed and war resumed in 1946

Why did the US and USSR both not want intervene in China?
They didn't want to dedicate troops as they both were too heavily involved in Europe

Why were the USSR worried about backing Mao Zedong and the CCP?
They had concerned over their control over Mao and the CCP so sent military supplies but weren't directly involved

1949, Ching Kia-Sek and his 2 million followers fled to Taiwan

What did the US do to try and weaken Mao's position?
By blocking the entry of the People's Republic of China in to UN and trying unsuccessfully to persuade American allies not to recognise Mao's government

What happened as a result of the US' 'loss' of China?
They became more hostile towards communists movements in Asia

Why did Mao's and Stalin's relationship always have distance?
Because Stalin failed to recognise Mao's revolution as Marxist which Mao resented and Stalin never gave Mao the approval or support he wanted
