Who were the Qing Dynasty?
The Qing Dynasty was the last in a long line of dynasties to rule China.

China had lost the Opium War against Britian which resulted in China having to sign a treaty which handed over Hong Kong.

The Chinese Empire was being carved up between Japan and European powers. This led to a nationalist movement that wanted to remove foreign powers and modernise China's government.

The chinese people resented the foreign powers because the foreigners had special rights meaning they could disobey chinese law.

An uprising which resulted in the abdication of the emperor and the establishment of the chinese repubic.

What happened when the Emperor died in 1916?
Shikai had left no successor so China was left for 10 years without proper leadership.

What was the 'May 4th movement', why was it formed and what was it the beginning of?
China resented the Japanese influence and it was dedicated to rejuvenation of China. This was the beginnign of the establishment of the communist party.

Who were the goumindang?
They were the nationalists. They were based on 3 principles: nationalism, democracy and the peoples livelihood.

They were the Chinese Communist Party.

Who was Chiang Kaishek?
Chaing Kaishek was the leader of the goumindang after Sun Yat-sen died in 1925.

What happened in April 1927?
Chaing Kaishek massacred his communist allies, it was estimated 5000-10,000 communists were killed.
