As Pu Yi was only 2, and his Regent Prince Chun fired able officials, wealthy Chinese didn't like high taxes and 1911 crop failure lead to angry peasants

Police fired on demonstrators in Sichuan and an accidental bomb exploded in an office filled with revolutionary soldiers in the Russian concession.

Chiang Kaishek lead the Guomindang to crush the warlords.

Why was the Northern Campaign successful?
Warlord armies mutinied and joined GMD, peasants believed propoganda, Chiang bribed key figures in different provinces, it enforced officer training, improved weaponry and gained a skilled army. They also gained the support of the Russians.

What was the Shang-Hai massacre?
Workers in Shang-Hai rebelled against warlords, led by the communists. But as soon as Chiang's army arrived he killed all the Communists.

When did the First United Front happen between?
1924-27 - KMT/GMD and CCP unite against the local warlords and foreign influence on China.

Why was the Jiangxi Soviet so popular with peasants?
A land law was passed which divided land among peasants, Communists reduced taxes on land, created Peasant Councils and made other positive changes.

The GMD under Mao tried to eliminate the Jiang-Xi soviet in four campaigns but all of them failed.

1933 - Chiang launched the fifth attack against the Communists, using the 'blockhouse strategy', surrounding them and stopping all movements in an out of the Soviet.

16th October 1934 - 87,000 soldiers of the Red Army set out on the retreat planned by Otto Braun.

The amount of equipment they were carrying, giving the Guomindang more time to prepare for their attack.

He was suspended and military control of the Red Army was given back to Mao.
