Child Language- Phonological Development

These cards will help to remember the seven ways in which children alter words and their typical mispronunciations during phonological development.

Addition
Adding an extra vowel sound to create a CVCV structure. E.G. 'Horsey' 'Doggie'

Deletion
Leaving out the last consonant of a word. E.G. cat- 'ca' mouse- 'mou'

Reduplication
The repetition of certain sounds and structures. E.G. 'choo choo' 'wee wee'

Substitution
One sound is swapped for another easier sound. E.G. rabbit- 'wabbit' sing- 'ting'

Consonant Cluster Reduction
Groups of 2 or more consonants are reduced to smaller units. E.G. dry- 'dai' frog- 'fog'

Deletion of Unstressed Syllable
The removal of an entire unstressed syllable from a word. E.G. banana- 'nana' computer- 'puter' pretending- 'tending'

Assimilation
Substituion occurs but the sound changes because of other sounds around it- a sound is substitued with one that is closer to others in the word. E.G. doggie- 'goggie'
