Vegetative stage
0-4 months. The vocal chords have not yet fully developed. Reflex crying noises.

Cooing stage
3-6 months. Open mouthed vowel sounds. (i) and (u) vowel sounds (ooo + aah) This is used to gain a response learning to gain control over vocal cord muscles. CDS - child direct speech

Babbling stage
6-12 months. Varlegated: gaba combinations. Reduplicated: gaga the same cv structure is used twice. CVCV pattern - gaga, woowoo. Repeated CV sounds.

Proto-word stage
9-12 months. Babbling that seems to match actual word sounds. Sounds that resemble actual words but are not consistently applied to their referents. i.e. calling everyone dada. An uncertain area between babbling and one word stages.

Holophrastic stage
9-18 months. Single recognisible words. For example, juice. 60% of childrens utterances are nouns.

Two word stage
18-24 months. Two word combinations. For example, play now. At around 2 years of age, children have about 50 words in their vocabulary, they begin to put words together. E.g "more juice." Pronouns are rare although children may use "me" for themselve

Telegraphic stage
24-30 months. 3, 4, 5, 6 word combinations. Main lexical items. For example, me go potty please.

Post-telegraphic stage
36 months+ Grammatically complete. For example, the dinosaur is going to eat you up.
