When do most perceptual capacities occur?
During first year of life through interaction between nurture and nature
1 of 16
Who investigated pattern and face perception?
Fantz (1963)
2 of 16
What did Fantz find in relation to patterns?
babies prefer complex patterns compared to simple patterns suggesting they can differentiate patterns
3 of 16
What did Fantz find in relation patterns and human faces
Newborns preferred patterns that resembled a human face compared to other patterns, again suggesting an innate perceptual ability to recognise faces. (children under 5 days)
4 of 16
How can perceptual development be studied in babies and animals?
Habituation, preferential looking, selective rearing (animals)
5 of 16
Outline Habituation
an infant will get used to (and get bored of) looking at familiar stimuli but will show interest in novel stimuli. Therefore research can see whether child can discriminate between 2 different stimuli
6 of 16
Outline preferential looking
2 objects are presented at once, and researchers record if any the infants attends to more
7 of 16
What is selective rearing and who used this for their investigation?
raising animal from birth under controlled condition to observe outcome (blakemore and cooper)
8 of 16
Which 5 cues do we use to judge depth perception?
Height in a plane, relative size, superimposition (infront of), texture gradient, linear perspective (of appears in distance lines of edge appear to get closer)
9 of 16
What is a way to develop perception in infants?
Sensory Integrative Therapy (SI therapy), toys
10 of 16
Outline SI therapy
Used to help people cope with sensory and perceptual difficulties, each child gets personal treatment program, the activities are designed to be fun and engaging
11 of 16
Outline 3 examples of SI therapy
Sitting and bouncing on a bouncy ball (vision and balance), Dancing on different types of music (sound and movement), using brushes on skin (hand eye coordination)
12 of 16
Who investigated the effectiveness of SI therapy?
Lang et al (2012)
13 of 16
What did Lang find (2012)?
A recent meta-analysis of 25 studies involving SI therapy. Found only a few studies had a clear positive results and most used small non-randomised samples
14 of 16
What are some toys that can help develop perception?
Shape sorters, where a cube is always a cube even if it doesn't look like a cube, it will always go through the cube shaped hole.
15 of 16
Outline how a Baby Gym can help with the development of perception
allows for motor skills of reaching and grasping; cognitive skills such as cause and effect, categorisation and memory; develop of concept of self due to mirrors; discrimination of shapes colours and depth perception
