What is the first stage?
Instrumental stage: language is used to fulfil the child's needs, first words are mainly concrete, concerned with obtaining food/objects/comfort

What is the second stage?
Regulatory stage: language is used to influence the behaviour of others, persuading and commanding + requesting other people to do as they want

What is the third stage?
Interactional stage: language is used to develop social relationships and ease interactions, phatic dimensions of talk such as; love you, daddy, thank you

What is the fourth stage?
Personal stage: language is used to express personal preferences/speakers identity, conveys attitudes and expresses feelings such as for example: good girl

What is the fifth stage?
Informative stage: used to communicate information, mainly to relay or request information

What is the sixth stage?
Heuristic stage: used to learn and explore the environment, may be questions or answers / commentary on child's actions

What is the seventh stage?
Imaginative stage: used to explore the imagination, often accompanies play or leisure activites
