Bellugi 1971 Pronoun Theory - Initial findings
Bellugi studied the pronoun use of Adam; she found that he acquired pronouns in 3 stages
1 of 6
Stage 1 Bellugi's pronoun theory
. 1- In stage 1 Adam referred to himself by his own name regardless of where it occurred in the sentence/utterance.
2 of 6
Stage 2 Bellugi's pronoun theory
2- Stage 2 he seemed to have learned that I/ me is the way people refer to themselves. He also learned that the pronoun from changes according to where it occurs in the sentence.
3 of 6
The rule of I and Me Bellugi
The rule Adam uses seems to be that I is used at the start of a sentence but me is used when the pronoun appears later in the sentence
4 of 6
Grammatical rule - Bellugi
Generally this is true in adult grammar but not always, his rule doesn't always work- has yet to grasp that I is needed when the pronoun is the subject and me when it is the object
5 of 6
Stage 3 Bellugi's pronoun theory
Acquired this grown up rule of English. He's gone beyond simple imitation- actively constructed rules for himself and has then revised them.
