Who introduced the term Chemotherapy and what year?
Paul Ehrlich in the early 1900s
1 of 17
What are the different types of Chemotherapy?
Two different types: Cancer and Anti-Infective
2 of 17
What is meant by the term 'prophylaxis'?
Treatment given or action taken in order to prevent disease.
3 of 17
What is meant by the term 'malignant'?
Likely to get worse and lead to death; very virulent and infectious.
4 of 17
Briefly explain what 'Anti-infective chemotherapy' is and what does it involve?
It is the use of drugs to either prevent or treat diseases caused by parasites or other microorganisms. It involves the selective inhibition of targets in the infective organism
5 of 17
What are the different ways drugs can be discovered?
Serendipity, Empirical screening of natural synthetic molecules, Synthetically modifying pharmacophores and then focused screening, target driven approaches
6 of 17
What do chemotherapeutic drug action depends on?
Enzymes
7 of 17
How do chemo drugs interact with enzymes?
1) inhibit enzymes (normal reaction inhibited) . 2) False substrate (Abnormal metabolites produced) 3) Pro-drug (Active drug produced)
8 of 17
What is a pro drug?
It is a biologically inactive compound metabolized in the body and can produce drugs.
9 of 17
What is meant by drug Therapeutic index?
It is the ratio of the dose producing toxic effects to the ratio of the dose that has the desired and effective response.
10 of 17
What does having a SMALL Therapeutic index mean?
It means that you only require a small increase in the dosage in order for the drug to produce adverse effects.
11 of 17
What should be considered when prescribing drugs with a low Therapeutic index value?
Weight, BMI, renal function, other drug therapies
12 of 17
Is it better to have a high or a low drug therapeutic index?
High because they require a greater increase of the dose to produce adverse effects.
13 of 17
What is Pharmacokinetics?
How the body effects the drug.
14 of 17
What is meant by Pharmacodynamics?
How the drug effects the body.
15 of 17
What are the 4 main principles of Pharmacokinetics?
Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Elimination
16 of 17
What is the main purpose of chemotherapy?
To prevent, cure or control disease however, adequate amount of the drug must be administered to the malignant or infected target tissues.
