What does the nucleus contain?
Protons and neutrons.
1 of 24
What are electrons? and what do they do?
Negatively charged atoms, move around the nucleus.
2 of 24
whats the rule for protons and electrons?
the number of protons equals number of electrons
3 of 24
How many atoms are their in an element?
one
4 of 24
What are compounds?
Atoms joined together.
5 of 24
What is ionic bonding?
A compound which is formed from a metal and non-metal consists of ions. the metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions and the non-metals atoms gain electrons to form negative ions.
6 of 24
What is a covalent bond?
When each atom shares an electron with another atom. Each atom has to make enough covalent bond to fill up its outer shell.
7 of 24
Whats the formula for atoms in a compound?
Carbon + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide.
8 of 24
How do you balance an equation?
By putting numbers in front of the formulas where needed.
9 of 24
How do you balance an equation?Method.
Find an element that doesnt balance and pencil in a number to try and sort it out. it may create another imbalance, carry on unbalanced elements and it will sort out quickly.
10 of 24
What is limestone mainly?
Calcium Carbonate.
11 of 24
What is the formula for limestone?
Calcium carbonate = Calcium oxide + carbon dioxide.
12 of 24
How does calcium oxide produce calcium hydroxide?
By adding water.
13 of 24
What is limestone used for?
powdered for cement. Or mixed with sand to make concrete.
14 of 24
What are the disadvantages of quarrying limestone?
Huge ugly holes, Noise and dust pollution, Destroys habitats. tons of waste materials.
15 of 24
Advantages of limestone?
Used to build houses, roads, chemicals used for paints, dyes and medicines.
16 of 24
How are metals extracted from their ores?
Chemically by reduction or electrolysis
17 of 24
What is electrolysis?
splitting up something by using electricity.
18 of 24
What is smelting?
When the ore is heated in a furnance
19 of 24
What does electrolysis require?
A liquid to conduct the electricity called electrolyte.
20 of 24
What are electrolyte made from?
Often metal salt solutions made from the ore or molten metal oxides.
21 of 24
How is electrolysis used to get copper?
Electrons are pulled off copper atoms at positive electrode causing them to go into solution as cu2 solutions. cu2 near neg electrode gain electrons and turn back into copper atoms. impurities are dropped.
22 of 24
What do the negative electrode start as?
Thin piece of pure copper and more pure copper adds to it
23 of 24
What do the positive electrodes start as?
A big lump of impure copper which will dissolve.
