What is Covalent Bonding?
Covalent Bonding is when two atoms share a pair of electrons.
1 of 16
What is Ionic Bonding?
Oppositely charged ions attracting each other in the ionic compound.
2 of 16
What is Chemical Bonding
When two or more elements react together to form a compound.
3 of 16
What type of elements join together to form Covalent Bonding?
Non-Metallic Elements.
4 of 16
How is an Ionic Compound formed?
When a metallic elements react with non-metallic elements.
5 of 16
Name two similarities of substances made up of simple molecules?
They have low boiling point and low melting point.
6 of 16
What is a "Macromolecule"?
Atoms of the same elements which can form several covalent bonds.
7 of 16
Name two forms of Carbon?
Graphite and Diamond
8 of 16
Give two similarities and differences between graphite and diamond?
Similarities:forms of carbon, hexagonal rings of atoms. Differences: graphite is a giant structure, two dimensional, graphite forms large particles
9 of 16
How are metals arranged and What happens when a force is applied to it?
Metals are arranged in layers and when a force is applied, then the layers of atoms can slide over each other.
10 of 16
Why can metals be made into wires?
Because they can move into a new position without breaking apart.
11 of 16
What are alloys?
Alloys are mixtures of metals or metals mixed with other elements.
12 of 16
Give two reasons why alloys can be more useful than pure wire?
They can be bent or deformed into different shapes and alloys are difficult for them to slide over each other.
13 of 16
What is Polypropene made from and What is Polyethene made from?
Polypropene is made from propene and Polyethene is made from ethene.
14 of 16
What is a Thermosetting Polymer?
Polymer that forms extensive cross linking between chains resulting in rigid materials which are heat resistant.
15 of 16
What is a Thermosoftening polymer?
Polymer that forms plastics which can be softened by heat, then remoulded into different shapes as they cool down and set.
