HideShow resource information
T11- What is a mole?
It is the name given to a certain number of atoms. 6.023 x 10^23
1 of 11
T11- Why is the mole THAT SPECIFIC NUMBER of atoms?
1 mole of any elemen/compound weighs the same as the element's/compound's atomic mass.
2 of 11
T11- What is the name given to the number of atoms in a mole?
The Avogadro number/constant
3 of 11
T11- What is the triangle used regarding mass, number of moles and Mr?
Mass on top, number of moles below to the left, and Mr to the right below.
4 of 11
T12- How would you describe a salt which contains water of crystallisation?
hydrous
5 of 11
T12- How would you describe a salt which does not contain water of crystallisation?
anhyrdous
6 of 11
T12- How are water molecules held within a salt lattice?
The atoms in the water molecule have a slight charge, so they are attracted to the positive and negative ions of the salt.
7 of 11
T12- What is the slight charge of the oxygen atom in the molecule?
negative, attracts to the cations.
8 of 11
T12- What is the slight charge of the hydrogen atom in the molecule?
positive, attracts to the anions.
9 of 11
T12- When heated what can happen to a hydrous salt?
It can lose its water of crystallisation and become anhydrous.
10 of 11
T12- What is the method to work out the number of moles of water of crystallisation in a salt?
1) Minus mass of any container, g of hydrous and anhydrous salt. 2) number of moles of water lost (hydrous salt mass- anhydrous salt mass to get H2O) / Mr of water. 3) Number of moles of anhydrous salt made (mass of anh/Ar.) 4) Ratio of salt to woc.
