For a long time, the earths early atmosphere was mostly carbon dioxide. Where did this carbon dioxide come from?
The volcanoes.
1 of 19
What 3 main gases is the current atmosphere made of and in what proportions are they found?
Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 21%, and Argon 1%.
2 of 19
Atoms can disappear completely in some chemical reaction - true or false?
False.
3 of 19
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound of hydrogen and carbon.
4 of 19
Name the main element that makes up coal.
Carbon.
5 of 19
When a hydrocarbon fuel burns, with what substance in the air do the hydrogen and carbon atom combine?
Oxygen.
6 of 19
When hydrocarbons burn in plenty of oxygen, the atoms involved rearrange themselves into carbon dioxide and what else?
Hydrogen oxide.
7 of 19
What removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere?
Plants.
8 of 19
What atoms make up carbon monoxide? Under what conditions is carbon monoxide produced?
ONE carbon and ONE oxygen atom. When there's not enough oxygen available when fuels burn.
9 of 19
What are particles of carbon otherwise known as and what kind of pollution do they cause?
Particulate carbon and they cause soot.
10 of 19
Describe briefly how the pollutant sulfur dioxide is produced.
When fuels containing sulfur burn the sulfur burns too and the atoms combine with the oxygen in the air to produce sulfur dioxide.
11 of 19
How does sulfur dioxide leave the atmosphere?
In the form of acid rain.
12 of 19
What effects does acid rain have on the environment?
Lakes become acidic and kill plants and animals, it kills trees and damages buildings and statues made from certain types of stone (e.g limestone)
13 of 19
Describe how nitrogen dioxide is produced when fossil fuels are burnt.
Fuels in a car engine burn and create nitrogen monoxide, then once the carbon monoxide is in the air it will react with oxygen to give nitrogen dioxide.
14 of 19
Give the formulas of nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide.
Nitrogen monoxide= NO, nitrogen dioxide= NO^2.
15 of 19
What effects do nitrogen oxides have on the environment?
It turns to acid rain and damages statues/buildings, kills fish, kills trees etc.
16 of 19
What do catalytic converters do?
They turn harmful gases into harmless gases by either adding or reducing the oxygen.
17 of 19
Name two things that everyone could do in order to reduce carbon dioxide pollution.
Use less electricity.
18 of 19
How do MOT tests help combat air pollution?
Cars emissions can be checked and people may be fined for producing to many pollutants.
