Chemistry C1

?
Carbon monoxide is harmful to? and why?
Humans because it prevents the blood from carring oxygen, which can be fatal.
1 of 11
What human actions are bad to the environment?
Burning fossil fuels because it releases pollutants into the atmosphere. Power stations and cars burn fossil fuels.
2 of 11
What does a sulfur concentration of 16ppb mean?
it means that in every one billion molecules of air,16 molecules will be sulfur dioxide.
3 of 11
Repeat measurements will allow a chemist to?
Calculate a mean which will give a good estimate of the true value.
4 of 11
When do compounds form?
When the atoms of two or more different elements chemically combine.
5 of 11
What is combustion?
Combustion is a chemical reactions that occurs when a fuel reacts with oxygen and energy is released.
6 of 11
Why is combustion a type of oxidation?
As fuel reacts with oxygen combustion is a type of oxidation reaction. The oxygen usually comes from the air, fuels burn faster in pure oxygen.
7 of 11
When does complete combustion occur?
When there is enough oxygen present for a fuel to burn completely.
8 of 11
What are hydrocarbons?
made of ONLY hydrogen and carbon atoms. Produce carbon dioxide and water when burned in air.
9 of 11
What is incomplete combustion?
Incomplete combustion occurs when there is not enough oxygen present. Depending on the amount of oxygen present carbon particulates or carbon monoxide may be produced.
10 of 11
Where does incomplete combustion occur?
In car engines. Exhaust emissions contain carbon particulates and carbon monoxide as well as carbon dioxide. Coal contains sulfur so sulfur dioxide is released when its burned.
