What causes all the properties of metallic structures?
it has delocalised electrons that come from the outer shell of every metal atom in the structure
1 of 6
How does having free electrons help with conducting heat and electricity?
The electrons are free to move through the whole structure so are able to carry the current. This makes metals good conductors
2 of 6
How do the electrons hold the atoms together in a regular structure?
There are strong forces of electrostatic attraction between the positive metal ions and the negative electrons.
3 of 6
What feature does the layers of atoms being able to slide over each other give to metals?
They can be bent and shaped
4 of 6
What is an alloy?
a mix of two or more metals together to create a substance with the properties they want
5 of 6
Why are alloys harder than pure metals?
Different elements have different sized atoms so the new metal atoms will distort the layers of metal atoms which makes it more difficult for them to slide over each other.
