What is covalent bonding?
Where atoms share electrons so they get a full outer shell
1 of 8
What are two types of covalent substances?
Simple molecular substances and giant covalent structures
2 of 8
What do chlorine, oxygen and water all have in common?
They are simble molecular substances and have very weak intermolecular forces.
3 of 8
What is an effect of weak intermolecular forces?
Low melting and boiling points as the molecules are easily parted from each other.
4 of 8
Can molecular substances conduct electricity? Why?
No because there are no ions so there's no electrical charge
5 of 8
What are diamond, silicon dioxide and graphite otherly known as?
Macromolecules
6 of 8
What are the boiling and melting points like for macromolecules? Why?
They are very high because the atoms are bonded to each other by strong covalent bonds
7 of 8
Why don't giant covalent structures conduct electricity? Which is the exception?
Because there are no charged ions. Graphite however does conduct electricity when molten.
