Explain paper chromatography?
1. Put spots of the coloured solution on a pencil baseline. 2. Put it in a beaker with some solvent with the baseline above the solvent. 3. The solvent seeps up the paper and different dyes form spots in different places.
1 of 5
How does this method of paper chromatography analyse a compound?
It suggest how many different substances are in that one compound
2 of 5
What is a problem with paper chromatography?
Even if there are four spots it means there are at least four substances but there could be more than four with two in the same place.
3 of 5
How does gas chromatography work?
It can seperate a mixture of compounds as substances travel through the tube at different speeds so are seperated. The time of each substance will be recorded (retention time). Each peak on a gas chromatograph shows a different substance.
4 of 5
How does attaching a mass spectrometer increase the accuracy of this process?
It can identify the substances leaving accurately by calculating the relative molecular mass of each substance given by the molecular ion peak.
