What is the theory of plate tectonics?
The Earth's crust is broken into tectonic plates which move slowly relative to each other. Some evidence for this is that the layers of rock on the East coast of South America and on the West coast of Africa are very similar.
1 of 10
How do the tectonic plates move?
The Earth's mantle heats up and rises to the crust because it's less dense. The liquid convection moves the tectonic plates.
2 of 10
Why does the Earth's crust stay the same size?
Land is forming at the same rate that it's being destroyed.
3 of 10
What are the three main types of rocks?
Igneous (formed when molten rock cools), sedimentary (formed by the 'cementing together' of small groups of sediment) and metamorphic (rocks change by the effects of heat and pressure).
4 of 10
What is brick made from?
Brick is made from clay and is used for walls.
5 of 10
What is concrete made from?
Concrete is made by mixing together water, cement and gravel and is used for tower blocks, motorway bridges and the foundations of houses.
6 of 10
What is cement made from?
Cement is made by heating limestone and clay together and is used for concrete.
7 of 10
What are the effects of quarrying?
It creates traffic, damages habitats and makes the environment naughty and dusty.
8 of 10
How does quarrying affect the environment?
Explosives used in quarrying produce noise and dust and air and noise pollution is caused by lorries transporting limestone from the quarry.
9 of 10
What is reinforced concrete?
This is made when liquid concrete is poured over a framework of reinforcing steel, the steel then strengthens the concrete. Reinforced concrete is made when the concrete sets.
