What is a calorimeter used to measure?
To measure the amount of energy released when substances burn.
1 of 8
What does a simple calorimeter consist of?
Some water in a glass beaker which is heated by a flame.
2 of 8
Why are simple calorimeters not accurate?
Because alot of the heat is used to heat the surroundings.
3 of 8
What is the equation used to measure the amount of energy released?
Mass of water x specific heat capacity of the water x temperature change
4 of 8
What is activation energy?
The minimum energy needed for the reaction to happen.
5 of 8
What is the reaction called when bonds are broken?
Endothermic because energy is taken in.
6 of 8
What is the reaction called when now bonds are formed?
Exothermic because energy is released.
7 of 8
What do catalysts do?
Catalysts increase the rate of the reaction by providing a different pathway with a lower activation energy.
