Actually mc_rubix, it says "the atom as a whole".  The nucleus is tiny as compared to the whole volume of an atom.

there can be some chemical bonds in mixtures, can't there? if there are compounds in the mixture

 Yeah, I agree with alastaircawdon- when taking into consideration the space around the nucleus so that the atom includes the electrons, the nucleus is tiny in comparison- pea in the royal albert hall and all that.
