Chemistry 2A - Structure and Bonding

?
Describe the process of ionic bonding.
When atoms lose or gain electrons to form charged particles (ions) which are then strongly attracted to one another (opposite charges attract)
1 of 5
Describe the electronic structure of sodium.

2 of 5
What is covalent bonding?
Where atoms share electrons with each other so that they've got full outer shells
3 of 5
What are the two types of covalent substance? Give three examples of each.
Simple Molecular Substances - Chlorine, oxygen and water Giant Covalent Structures - Diamond, graphite and silicon dioxide
4 of 5
List three properties of metals and explain how metallic bonding causes these properties.
They consist of a giant structure. They have a 'sea of delocalised electrons'. The free electrons allow the layers of atoms to slide over each other.
