Crude Oil
A mixture of hydrocarbons (compound that contains hydrogen and carbon atoms only, joined together by a covalent bonds)
1 of 11
Fractional Distillation
Mixture of Hydrocarbons (Crude Oil) are separated into useful products, such as fuels. The crude oil is evaporated and it's vapours condense into different temperatures in the fractioning column.
2 of 11
Alkanes
Family of hydrocarbons that share the same general formula:CnH2n+2. They are saturated hydrocarbons.
3 of 11
Alkenes
Family of hydrocarbons that share the same general formula: CnH2n. They are unsaturated hydrocarbons.
4 of 11
Hydrocarbons as fuels
Petrol, Kerosene, Diesel Oil + Fuel Oil
5 of 11
Environmental Impacts of burning fuels
Water Vapour, Carbon Dioxide, Carbon monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide are pumped into the atmosphere.
6 of 11
Sulfur Dioxide
Produced when burning compounds with sulfur in them. Sufur dioxide causes acid rain; then rivers + lakes become too acidid for life to survive.
7 of 11
Carbon Dioxide
By releasing it into the atmosphere is causes global warming.
8 of 11
Alternative Fules
Biofuels + Hydrogen
9 of 11
Cracking
A chemical reaction that produces smaller hydrocarbons from bigger hydrocarbons
10 of 11
Polymers
Made by Alkenes. Landfill, Incineration and Recycling are the ways to dispose of them.
