Chemistry 2.1 - Polymers

?
Smart Materials
Behave differently depending on the conditions the y are in e.g Temperature
1 of 17
Nitinol
A smart-material and shape-memory alloy. It is a metal alloy made from titanium and nickel. It can be twisted and bent like rubber but can returned to it's remembered shape when heated.
2 of 17
Glasses Frames
Can be made from nitinol and can bent into it's remembered shape very easily
3 of 17
Dental braces
Nitinol can also be used for dental braces, as they can return to their remembered shape when heated in the mouth, pulling the teeth with it
4 of 17
Nanoparticles
Particles that measure 1-100 nanometres across. They contain a few hundred atoms.
5 of 17
Fullerenes
A type of nanoparticle. They are molecules of carbon shaped like hollow balls or closed tubes, made of hexagonal rings of carbon atoms.
6 of 17
Properties of Nanoparticles
Nanoparticles have different properties to the carbon molecules they are made up of
7 of 17
Nanotubes
Nanotubes are created by the joining of fullerenes, they are tiny hollow tubes only a few nanometrees across. They are very strong due to the number of covalent bonds they contain.
8 of 17
Tennis Rackets
Tennis rackets can be strengthened with nanotubes.
9 of 17
Nanoscience
The research and development into new uses for nanoparticles.
10 of 17
Volume and Surface area
Nanoparticles have a huge surface area to volume ratio so they make good industrial catalysts.
11 of 17
Sensors
Nanoparticles can be used to make sensors that are highly specific to particular molecules. They can be used when testing water purity.
12 of 17
Building Materials
Nanoparticles can be used to create, stronger, lighter building materials.
13 of 17
Cosmetics
Nanoparticles can be used to create sun tan cream and deoderant. They are particularly popular as they do not leave white marks on the skin
14 of 17
Nanomedicine
May be able to develop ways to deliver medicines tothat are absorbed easily to specific target cells by using fullerenes
15 of 17
Lubricant coatings
Developed using fullerenes to to reduce friction in artificial joints and gears
16 of 17
Electrical conductor
Nanotubes conduct electricity so can be used for electrical circuits and computer chips
