What is a nucleus made up of and what are their charges?
Protons (+1) and Neutrons (0)
1 of 13
What is an element?
A substance that is only made up of one type of atom.
2 of 13
What is an electron?
An electron occupies the shells around the nucleus on which they move. They are tiny, but cover a lot of space. They are also negatively charged.
3 of 13
Why do atoms have no overall charge?
The number of protons (positive) and electrons (negative) are always equal.
4 of 13
What is the atomic number of an element?
The number of protons in an atom of an element.
5 of 13
What is the mass number of an element?
The sum of protons and neutrons in an atom.
6 of 13
What does it mean when elements are in the same group in the periodic table?
The elements have the same number of electrons in their highest energy level (outer electrons), which gives them similar chemical properties.
7 of 13
Why are the noble gases in group 0 unreactive?
Because the eletrons fill up their outer shell, which gives them a stable arrangement.
8 of 13
How are compounds formed?
When elements react and their atoms join with other atoms. This involves giving, taking or sharing electrons to form ions or molecules.
9 of 13
When a compound is formed from metals and non-metals what does it consist of?
Ions
10 of 13
When a compound is formed from non-metals what does it consist of?
Molecules
11 of 13
In molecules how are they 'held together?'
Held together by covalent bonds.
12 of 13
In a chemical reaction, why does the mass of the products equal the mass of the reactants?
No atoms are lost or made during the reation.
