Describe an Alpha particle.
A cluster of 2 Protons and 2 Neutrons (Helium)
1 of 9
Describe a Beta particle.
Fast moving electrons
2 of 9
Describe gamma rays.
High energy electromagnetic radiation
3 of 9
Give the definition of half-life.
The time taken for the radioactivity of a radioisotope to fall to half its value
4 of 9
How does radiation cause mutations in DNA?
High energy radioactive emissions break chemical bonds in cells
5 of 9
How is Cobalt-60 used in medicine?
Cobalt-60 is used in radiotherapy to kill cancerous cells and prevent tumours
6 of 9
How is Iodine-131 used in medicine?
Used to monitor iodine uptake in defective thyroid glands
7 of 9
How is Potassium-40 used today?
Used to estimate the geological age of rocks
8 of 9
Carbon-14 is used in carbon dating. How does carbon dating work?
Organisms absorb C-14 from the atmosphere until death. When dead the remaining C-14 begins to decay. The rate of decay decreases over the years and that which is left can be used to calculate the age of organisms
