How do you do a flame test?
Clean a nichrome wire by dipping in conc. hydrochloric acid and then in a hot flame. Dip in conc. hydrochloric acid and then in the solid being tested so it sticks to the wire. Hold in flame.

Why is the colour shown in a flame test?
By heating, you excite electrons until they jump to a higher energy level. As they fall back to their original energy level energy is released as light.

What causes the specific colour shown in a flame test?
As the electrons fall back to their original energy levels, a specific amount of energy is released which corresponds to a particular wavelength (on the EM light spectrum)
