Chemistry topic 1-5

?
Name two different types of reaction which are exothermic.
Neutralisation reactions and combustion.
1 of 8
What is an electrolyte in an electrochemical cell?
It is the liquid that contains ions which react with the electrodes.
2 of 8
Give two factors that affect the voltage produced by an electrochemical cell.
The electrolyte used in the cell and the type of electrodes.
3 of 8
Explain why non-rechargeable batteries eventually lose their charge.
The cells use irreversible reactions so once one of the reactants is used up they don't produce any more charge so it is lost and they have to be replaced.
4 of 8
Name an electrolyte commonly used in hydrogen - oxygen fuel cells?
Potassium hydroxide
5 of 8
In a hydrogen - oxygen fuel cell which molecule becomes oxidised and which becomes reduced?
They hydrogen molecule gets oxidised and the oxygen molecule becomes reduced and they react with H+ ions to form water.
6 of 8
Write down the overall equation for the reaction in hydrogen - oxygen fuel cells.
hydrogen and oxygen react to form water.
7 of 8
State 3 advantages of hydrogen - oxygen fuel cell powered cars over battery - powered cars.
Batteries from battery - powered fuel cells are more polluting when disposed off then fuel cells, they are made from highly toxic chemicals. Batteries are more expensive than fuel cells and need to be recharged more often.
