Why do alkali metals have to be stored in oil?
To stop them reacting with oxygen in the air
1 of 15
What happens as you go down the Group 1 elements?
The elements get more reactive, have lower melting and boiling points
2 of 15
What happens when we add lithium to water?
The metal floats on the water, moves around and effervesces
3 of 15
What happens when we add sodium to water?
The metal floats on the water, moves around and effervesces
4 of 15
What happens when we add potassium to water?
The metal floats on the water, moves around and sets on fire and burns with a lilac flame
5 of 15
Why does the fizzing happen?
Because the metal reacts with the water to form hydrogen gas
6 of 15
What does the reaction between an alkali metal and water produce?
A metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas
7 of 15
What pH do the metal hydroxides have?
A high pH
8 of 15
What happens when alkali metals react with chlorine gas?
They produce metal chlorides which are white solids
9 of 15
What are some of the properties of the transition elements?
Good conductors of electricity and heat, hard and strong, have high densities and have high melting points
10 of 15
What colours are the compounds of transition metals?
Bright colours
11 of 15
What are the halogens?
Non-metallic elements in Group 7 of the periodic table
12 of 15
What happens as you go down the Group 7 elements?
The elements get less reactive and their melting and boiling point increase
13 of 15
Why does the reactivity of Group 1 elements increase going down the group?
Because the outer electron is less strongly attracted to the nucleus as the number of electron shells increases so the outer electron is easier to remove because it experiences less shielding
14 of 15
Why does the reactivity of Group 7 elements decrease going down the group?
Because the attraction of the outer electrons to the nucleus is less as the number of electron shells increase so the incoming electron experiences less attraction going into the outer shell that is furthest away from the nucleus
